Why Choose Us:
If you are having a hard time adapting to life with an autoimmune condition, you are not alone. Many are looking for more natural approaches when it comes to supporting autoimmune conditions. However, this type of support is often not readily available from our conventional medical system. Whether you were just diagnosed or have been struggling for years, you can benefit from the support of an autoimmune wellness expert. From autoimmune friendly recipes, supportive supplements and herbs, or guidance on underlying fundamental health imbalances, I strive to help you feel your best, and in control of your health, despite autoimmunity.
As a nutritionist and AIP certified coach, I work to fill the gap in our conventional medical system by providing nutrition, supplement, herbal, and holistic services that are especially helpful in supporting autoimmunity. Using evidence-based principles I help you customize a diet and self-care routine to help you feel your best.
There's more to life with autoimmunity than hoping for a good day. Be proactive; boost your health from the inside out and regulate underlying issues that could be making you feel worse than you need to. I've been in your shoes and know how overwhelming it is to embark on the journey alone. It doesn't have to be that way. I look forward to working with you!

My Autoimmune Story
Emerald Santacruz
Founder, BCHN, NBC-HWC, AIPCC
In 2014 I had just closed a stressful chapter of my life and was excited for the future. I was about to turn 21 and had recently bought my first home. I remember thinking, "this is going to be the best year of my life!" Unfortunately, it turned out to be the year my debilitating pain began.
Just a few weeks after my 21st birthday, I woke up with extreme shoulder pain. The worst pain I had ever experienced. My doctors thought it was tendonitis caused by overuse or poor ergonomics. However, within a matter of weeks the pain spread to nearly every joint (from my toes to my jaw, and everywhere in between), extreme fatigue, swelling, skin problems, female issues, eye infections, brain fog, sleep issues, rashes, stabbing pain all over the soles of my feet while standing, and more. As you can imagine, my emotional and mental health also declined during this time.
Basic tasks, like putting on lotion, washing dishes, standing up from the toilet (I know, TMI) pouring a jug of juice, uncapping a water bottle, brushing my hair, or turning the key in my car's ignition were very painful and almost impossible to do without help. I had to cut my long hair because it was too heavy and I was unable to lift my arms over my head due to pain and immobility in my shoulders. I had to move back in with my parents, after having just purchased my first house, because I could not perform basic household duties.
I began to mourn my "old life," and the future prospects I thought I'd miss out on. I wondered if I would ever get married, if I would become a burden to my family, or become completely disabled. I regretted all the times I avoided the gym because, now, I could barely hold a 2-pound weight or walk down the hall without sharp pain.
Throughout all of this, by some miracle, I maintained a full-time desk job. I cringed and winced my way through the day until I could finally get home and climb into bed. In the mornings my dad would lovingly walk me to my car, carry my bags, and turn the key in the ignition because he knew how difficult those things were for me. At work I'd avoid standing up too frequently because my knees and feet were in so much pain. I would do things in batches (ie. use bathroom, refill water, drop off shredding, dump trash, microwave lunch, collect printer items - all in one trip). My coworker once commented on my "dainty" way of writing, typing, walking, etc....I explained that I was moving cautiously to avoid feeling like something (my joints) was going to snap off or out of place.
Finally, around July or August of 2014, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was told I would need powerful medication for the rest of my life and that, if I did not start the medication ASAP, my joints would become so damaged within 6 months that surgery would be inevitable.
I was in disbelief. I could not understand how this happened so suddenly. It seemed like one day I was going out with friends, salsa dancing, decorating my house, and within a matter of weeks, I felt as though I had aged 70 years. I thought I must have been misdiagnosed and that whatever it was would disappear as quickly as it started.
I never found my "mystery diagnosis" but my stubbornness and search for alternative answers led me to finding support through naturopathy, functional medicine, holistic wellness, and other complementary and alternative health principles. On of the most impactful things I learned of was the impact that diet has on autoimmunity.
I began making changes and, to say I experienced dramatic improvement would be an UNDERSTATEMENT. Shortly after changing my diet, I went from feeling terrible every day to being able to run, lift weights, and live a full life again. I no longer felt limited by my illness. I continued to improve my overall health by improving stress management, sleep, proper movement, and reducing my toxic exposures.
It has been 10 years since that time. Other than the day I was diagnosed, I was never again recommended to take medication and have never needed surgery. I share this, not to villanize conventional treatments, but to emphasize the power that basic improvements can have on our health. In my specific case, I was able to achieve sufficient improvement such that my rheumatologists was ok with monitoring me without medication. In some cases, medication may be necessary. However, you can, and should, also use nutrition and wellness strategies to boost your body's healing power.
My transformation was eye-opening and forever life-changing. In the early stages of my illness, I deeply felt the lack of support and resources for natural wellness and nutritional solutions in the autoimmune community. I could not understand why no one else seemed to know about these strategies. I wanted to shout from the rooftops to anyone going through what I did that, there is more we can do and there is a light at the end of the tunnel!!
I became driven to help others restore their health, just as I had done. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Integrative Health and became a Board Certified Holistic Nutritionist, Health Coach, and Autoimmune Paleo Certified Coach, which allows me to share with others the methods that helped me, and so many others, restore true health.
If you have autoimmunity and are tired of feeling like your life is controlled by your illness, please consider the power of nutrition and holistic wellness strategies and adjust your health care routine to include these areas. Medications and conventional treatments are useful and effective for managing symptoms and disease progression, true. However, we must also care for the needs of our bodies right down to the individual cells. A medication will not fully address symptoms and effects of a nutrient deficiency, a food sensitivity, or a toxic diet/lifestyle, all of which can exacerbate symptoms of autoimmunity.
Don't worry you don't need to do this alone. I can guide you through the process, step-by-step so you can focus on feeling better.
To get started, click here to book an appointment. Or better yet, consider my autoimmune program, Rheum-Mission which is a 12-week online program combining personalized support, meal plans, and even functional testing to put you on the path to feeling your best.
If you still have questions, feel free to book a discovery call to see if we could be a good fit for each other.
I truly wish you the best on your healing journey!
